The Christmas season is upon us, and it’s time to consider decorating and getting into the festive feel. For many, decorating the interior of their house is a no-brainer and there’s lots of range in how different families go about it. However, you can have just as much fun decorating the outside of the house, so you can arrive home and instantly feel in the Christmas spirit. This article provides some tips and tricks to help you decorate your home’s exterior for Christmas, whether you’re doing it as a family, a couple or independently!

Front door decorations

Front doors are among the easiest and most traditional ways to decorate your home for Christmas. It is also very accessible, as you can decorate your front door whether you live in a flat or in a house. There are a few ways to do this that have been outlined below:

Wreaths

Wreaths are a staple of Christmas decorations and are so personalisable. This decoration is an easy DIY where you can buy holly, tinsel, evergreen branches and various Christmas-themed items. This is a great option for families or couples looking to create a joint decoration that reflects your home and how you celebrate.

If you don’t want to DIY, there’s a range of wreaths available online or in stores over the Christmas period, in all different colours, sizes and prices!

Lights

Lights are a telltale symbol of Christmas, as they are put up across cities, towns and villages in the UK, and 84% of people still put them up in their homes. It is not uncommon to use lights outside the house (31%) and the front door is one of the easiest places to put them.

When choosing the colour of the lights, there are a couple of things to consider. Firstly, you may have a go-to Christmas light that you and your family always choose; in this case, go with that! Otherwise, think about how the rest of the door and what might match. For example, if you have a rustic front door, consider warm white lights; for a modern front door, consider cold white lights to match the sleekness and for a traditional wooden front door, consider the classic Christmas lights – multi-coloured!

Doorstep decorations

If doorstep space is an option for you, it is another easy space to decorate with bought or DIY decorations. One thing to be conscious of when deciding on decorations for this space is whether it is covered, so you know whether you need waterproof decorations.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Winter-friendly plants (evergreen trees, ivy, etc).
  • Extra decor like Santas, reindeer, elves, candy canes, etc.
  • A boot box decorated with Christmas phrases or symbols is both festive and practical for winter wellies or boots!

External wall decorations

The external walls are usually hard to decorate due to moisture and the texture of the external house material. The best way to make the house feel more festive is to hang the same lights you’ve hung on the door just under your gutter line. You can also hang Christmas plants like mistletoe or holly, as well as fake icicles to add an extra touch.

Garden decorations

Garden decor is not always an option, particularly for people living in inner cities. However, if you have the option, gardens can be decked out with all sorts of inflatable and waterproof decorations. If you have trees, they can be lit up with extra lights, as you can’t have enough lights at Christmas time!
